It is no secret that mountain biking is a popular activity in Lake Tahoe. With the crystal blue waters, sunny blue skies and challenging trails winding through the forest, it is no wonder that locals and visitors alike look to Tahoe for a great mountain biking adventure. We aren’t just biased either. Alright, maybe a little, but we have good reason. A recent poll from Singletracks.com named the Tahoe Rim Trail/Flume Trail the #1 most scenic mountain biking trails in Western USA!
While there are several trails all around the lake and the south shore specifically, it is good to know which trails are for what levels. A great beginner trail is Fallen Leaf Lake. Even the youngin’s can join in on this one, creating a family activity for all ages. It is 5 miles long with only a 30 ft elevation change and rewards you by ending on a rocky beach with a view of Fallen Leaf Lake with Mt. Tallac in the distance.
A well-known intermediate trail is the Powerline trail. This trail entrance is conveniently located close to the middle of town at the end of Ski Run Blvd at the top of Saddle Rd. It only takes a little over an hour to finish and offers a nice mix of climbing, descending and winding. The scenery is gorgeous with seasonal creeks.
A South Lake Tahoe favorite, which is most definitely for experts, is Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. This famous trail offers a great climb, fantastic technical descent and a banked single track. Of course the scenery is gorgeous and there is room for more with the entrance to Coral Loop easily accessible.
If you are visiting and love to mountain bike, but weren’t able to bring your bike, there are several businesses that will rent them out for the day. Sierra Ski And Cycle Works is one that rents kids, cruisers and full suspension all mountain bikes. Camp Richardson’s Mountain Sports Center also rents bikes, accessories, performs repairs and provides information and maps on hiking and biking in the area. Regardless of where you go, enjoy and be safe!
