Lake Tahoe is known for its clarity and beautiful blue waters. It attracts more than 3 million people a year from all over the globe. Lake Tahoe has been designated under the National Clean Water Act an Outstanding National Water Resource. Because of this there are several agencies dedicated to keeping our waters clear and blue. How can you participate in preserving our beautiful lake from your own backyard when you have a Tahoe Keys waterfront property? This is simple. Keep trash out of the water and be mindful of what you are doing to your own landscape to affect the lake directly.
Thanks to spring, landscaping and gardening is in full swing. Part of the reason the lake is so blue is because Algae and aquatic weeds lacks the nutrients needed to grow. However, fertilizer used on your property contains phosphorus. This assists aquatic weeds and algae in growth. When purchasing fertilizer for your yard and garden, pick one that doesn’t contain phosphorus. If that isn’t an option, use less than the recommended amount. When going in to a lawn and garden shop, ask the associates for advice on the best ones. As they specialize in these products, they can help you find a fertilizer that will help you with your project without negatively impacting our pristine lake.
Another step to think about is preventing overwatering with results in run off. When excessive run off happens, the water carries the phosphorus into the lake. How can a Tahoe Keys resident do this while still making sure their landscaping looks good and their gardens grow? Simple, just water every other day. Lawns in the Tahoe Keys only need about half an inch of water every day. Use drip irrigation for your gardens and other landscaping. The Tahoe Keys Property Owner Association is participating in keeping phosphorus out of the lake by assigning the odd number homes to water on odd numbered days and the even numbered homes to water on even numbered days. This makes it easy for Tahoe Keys residents to remember. If you use a landscaping service, be sure to keep make sure they are aware of these guidelines.
